Daniel Kaplan Associates
Daniel Kaplan, an internationally renowned expert in the rental industry, is the founder of Daniel Kaplan Associates (1997), a consulting group focusing on emerging issues in the service industry. Kaplan was President of Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation (HERC), the largest industrial and construction equipment rental company in the world, from 1982 until 1997. As president of HERC, Kaplan grew sales from $58 million to over $500 million, and expanded from 55 domestic locations to 140 locations worldwide.
Daniel Kaplan Associates advises corporations on strategies for entering the equipment rental industry and specialty areas. In addition, the firm assists existing rental companies, from stand-alone stores to multinational organizations, on improving operations and financial results. In his more than 25 years in the rental industry, Kaplan purchased rental companies in the US & Europe and has opened over 100 greenfield rental locations around the world. He has worked with rental companies, dealers and manufactures to launch rental operations in North America, Europe, Latin America & Asia. He has performed operational reviews in over 2,000 rental locations.
Kaplan, who coined the phrase “Hitting 1,000 Singles,”developed the policies, procedures and methodologies of the modern rental industry. His book, Service Success: Lessons From a Leader on How to Turn Around a Service Business (1994, John Wiley and Sons) is widely used in academic and professional settings and is considered a must read for anyone in the rental industry. Kaplan frequently writes article, and is quoted regularly, in industry magazines and journals including Rental Equipment Register, Rental Management, Access International, Rent Smart, Construction Equipment, European Rental News, Construction Europe, International Construction, and Engineering News Record. Kaplan has been noted on several occasions in Fortune Magazine, and has been featured in Fortune as one of “25 Who Help the U.S. Win.”
Kaplan holds a BS from Rider University and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He a member of the Board of Trustees of Rider University, Board of Advisors of Tavant Technologies, and Board of Directors of Indian Infrastructure Equipment Ltd.
Kaplan was inducted into the American Rental Association Hall of Fame in February 2006.
